A good Samaritan on his way home from work has received a Chief Superintendent’s Good Citizenship Award.

Police were contacted by the NHS 111 service which was dealing with a call from a suicidal man who was believed to be near Saltash.

A PC found him in the carriageway of the A38 and had to swerve to avoid him. She approached him on foot to try to persuade him to come out of the carriageway as traffic was in danger of colliding with him.

The man refused to leave the road and became verbally aggressive and threatening towards the PC.  She grabbed him and tried to pull him to safety.

He started to struggle but he tried to pull her into the road.

Richard Best was on his way home from work when he came across the PC struggling in the road with the man. Recognising the difficult situation he stopped to help her and, with guidance from the officer, assisted her in safely restraining the man until more officers attended.

Devon and Cornwall Police said: ’There is no doubt that Mr Best’s intervention and assistance, combined with the PC’s actions, resulted in the incident being resolved safely with no injuries being sustained and no collisions on the road.’
