A CONTROLLED explosion has been carried out after a phosphorous flare was found on the beach at Whitsand Bay.

The flare, believed to have been used during a naval exercise, was discovered between Wigglecliff and Polhawn.

Phosphorous flares can be extremely dangerous if the contents become exposed to air or water.

The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Unit were in attendance this afternoon along with the Coastguard, and a controlled explosion was carried out just after 2.30pm.
