South East Cornwall cyclist Harry Luxton won the National Junior Hill Climb Champion award at Sheffield at the weekend.

In fact Harry, 17, who lives at MIllbrook wasn't very far off the top men's results being placed 9th overall out of 180 entrants – a real achievement considering his age.

The trophy will be re-presented to Harry when it has been engraved, along with a medal at a national cycling time trials ceremony in January in Oxfordshire.

Recognising Harry's determination to succeed in the event, coaches at his Plymouth-based cycling club RUTT Cycling Club had helped to tailor a specific training programme, which paid off brilliantly on Sunday.

Harry had fought off tough competition throughout this year's cycling Hill Climb season to be selected to compete in the National Hill Climb event which is held every October on different types of hill around Britain. Competitors take themselves to the limit of exertion to get to the top of the hill.

This year's climb was at Pea Royd Lane, a 0.7-mile steep hill with a few sharp corners and sections at 20 per cent gradient.
