Whisper it quietly but Argyle should already be looking forward to a New Year FA Cup date at Anfield, writes Ross Reid.

Derek Adams’ side had the lion’s share of play against Newport County at Home Park and should have finished off their opponents.

Unfortunately Plymouth struggled to break down Graham Westley’s resolute County, reduced to 10 men from the 22nd minute.

County resorted to a five-man back line for the second half and continually thwarted Adams’ shot-shy Greens.

In The Pilgrim match-day programme notes on Saturday, Adams pointedly noted: ‘We have got enough players in the squad who are more than capable of scoring goals – you see that in the scoring charts – so when the chances come along we just need to score.’

But let’s not get carried away by negativity here; that would be far too easy. Saturday’s drab goalless draw signalled the end of a three match losing streak. Positive.

If Argyle win at County on Wednesday, December 21, then they will win a handsome third round trip to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. Positive.

Argyle are still in the cup and go into tomorrow’s home League Two match against Doncaster Rovers second in the table. Positive.

Adams said: ‘We have won 12 (league) games which is more than anybody else in this league.’

As the boss points out ‘it is an excellent start to the season.’
