Wendron United 2 Liskeard Athletic 5

Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one west

Champions Liskeard ended their magnificent season on a high by scoring three goals in the last six minutes at Wendron to chalk up their 23rd league win.

Striker Sam Rogers was the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick and creating two goals for top scorer James Lorenz, who has finished the season with 56 goals.

Such an emphatic victory seemed very unlikely as the game entered the last quarter with Wendron deservedly 2-1 ahead and looking capable of adding to their lead.

But the introduction of midfield maestro Jarrad Woods in the 67th minute proved a turning point and within nine minutes Liskeard were level with a superb direct free kick from Rogers.

Liskeard, who had looked out of sorts for long spells, now poured forward and they went 3-2 ahead with a left foot shot from Rogers which completed his hat-trick.

Rogers then turned provider with a super chipped pass from the centre circle which Lorenz raced on to and he finished with aplomb two minutes from time.

And two minutes into time added on Rogers threaded a pass through to Lorenz, who fired the ball into the net to round off a remarkable season.

Earlier, in the 34th minute, a brilliant run from Lorenz along the right flank, leaving a defender in his wake, led to the opening goal, with Rogers smashing home a close range effort.

But a mix-up from a goal kick between Liskeard keeper Josh Gilbert and skipper Jack Podmore provided an equaliser on a plate five minutes later, with Michael O’Neill firing into the net.

Wendron could have been ahead before half-time but O’Neill’s 18 yard shot was brilliantly tipped around the post by Gilbert and two minutes later Adam King headed off the line to deny Sam Humphries.

But it took the home side only two minutes of the second half to go ahead, with Jack Stocker curling in a beauty from 20 yards after more hesitancy in the Liskeard defence.

The Blues seemed to be losing their way, and had three players, Podmore, Lorenz and Woods, booked for dissent as they appeared to be ending their season with a whimper.

But then came the late revival.
