WITH Wadebridge Town pulling out their second team during the summer, the St Piran League will continue with only 15 teams, writes Dave Potham.

When the 2019-20 campaign came to an abrupt end, St Austell were heading the table, and pre-season good form means they will be likely challengers this time around.

The good news is that fans can return to viewing their teams.

Hoping to give St Austell a run for their money are Polperro, who were lying in third place.

A change of management has meant that long-serving boss Matt Pengelly has stood down, to be replaced by long-serving player Steve Sharpe and Phil Wright, with Dave Gilbert the new player-coach.

Gilbert said: "As long as the players are open to listening and improving, we will take steps in the right direction."

Polperro start with a home game against Callington Town on Saturday, before a visit to Millbrook on Tuesday night.

Polperro won 7-0 and drew 2-2 last season with Callington, who themselves are under new management in Matt Frost.

Callington have suffered over the last few seasons but pre-season has provided optimism.

It is all change at Saltash United after Steve Manuel stood down as manager to be replaced by Robin Duff.

Saltash open their account at Liskeard Athletic, for whom Tim May has returned to manage the Lux Park outfit.

A single goal from Scott Coombe saw the Ashes to victory last season. It is the big Tamarside derby on Tuesday, when the Ashes receive Torpoint Athletic, who beat them 2-0 last season.

Launceston can feel satisfied with last season’s showing as they were lying handily in fourth place at the time of lockdown.

Manager Andy Sleep is confident that the team can repeat last term’s performance.

Unfortunately they are the odd team out and do not open their account until next Saturday when they receive Sticker, who they beat 2-0 last season.

Saltash Borough manager Kev McCann is confident his charges can do even better than last season when they finished in sixth place.

The ’Borough’ face a difficult opening game when they receive Millbrook, whose manager Darren Hamley has a settled squad.

A single Joe Lewis goal settled the game in Millbrook’s favour last season.

The lockdown and bad weather meant Millbrook only played 12 games in 2019-20.

Millbrook face Polperro on Tuesday – the pair didn’t meet last season - while the ’Borough’ are at Liskeard Athletic on Wednesday, having beaten the Blues 5-1 last term, and also drawing 1-1.

Lanreath had a torrid time last season and struggled to compete as well as having a very poor disciplinary record.

They receive St Dennis, who hammered them 12-0 in 2019-20.

New manager Callum McGhee and assistant Danny Hayward have worked hard in the close season, and said: ’Everyone involved in the club is working so hard to make things happen."

On Tuesday, Lanreath visit St Austell, who beat them 4-1 last season.

Torpoint Athletic, under Martin Piper, have enjoyed an excellent pre-season and are confident they can improve on last term’s ninth place. They open their account at Morwenstow, where they went down 3-2 last season.
