CALLINGTON Town men’s first team have had their next two games postponed following a positive COVID-19 test from one of their players.

The player displayed symptoms on Sunday and got an immediate test.

The result came back positive on Tuesday morning, and the club immediately put its COVID-19 Emergency Plan into effect.

“As soon as we were informed of the positive test, we advised the league, the FA, and Public Health Cornwall, and identified a small number of team-mates who were in close contact with the player.

"We have advised them to self-isolate for 14 days and, if they experience symptoms, to get a test as soon as possible,” said club secretary and one of the COVID officers, Andrew Long.

“The clubhouse and changing rooms have been closed as a preventative measure, and will be deep cleaned prior to re-opening.

"No spectator is deemed to be at risk in line with FA and Government guidelines.

"We are doing our best to keep all players, officials and supporters safe and wish the player a complete and speedy recovery,” he added.

This does not affect the club’s other four sides, whose matches will continue as planned.

The player, who has not been named, played in the South West Peninsula League fixture at home to Penzance last Saturday.

Penzance are not considered at risk as they were the away team and would have used different dressing rooms, and the playing of the match is not considered as “close contact” by the FA/Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.

The two games postponed are the trip to Godolphin Atlantic on Saturday and at home to Sticker next Wednesday.

It is expected Callington will resume fixtures from Saturday, October 31 onwards.

League secretary Phil Hiscox said: “Callington have been offered, and will pass on relevant guidance to their members, playing or otherwise, who were in attendance last Saturday, but ‘close contact’ is a track and trace matter, that does not include actual playing, but would involve close interactions regarding travel, use of dressing rooms and post-match hospitality in any close social groups of six.”

Sticker have quickly re-arranged a game for next week against Saltash United.

Hiscox explained: "Saltash have asked if they could play Sticker instead as the Ashes are behind on games and Sticker have agreed to bring forward the midweek game – Sticker v Saltash - from November 24 to next Tuesday, October 27, with a 7.30pm kick-off."

Meanwhile, Callington have begun the search for a new manager by inviting applications to fill the vacancy for their SWPL side following the recent decision of Sam Borthwick to stand down from the post.

Applicants are invited to email the secretary of the club on [email protected] in the first instance.
