Wendron United 1 Millbrook 6

Millbrook secured promotion to the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League premier division in style on Monday afternoon by hitting Wendron for six at a sweltering Underlane.

Victory for Mackenzie Brown’s team means they can only be overtaken in division one west by Ludgvan, who did not apply for promotion.

Millbrook will complete their season at their Jenkins Park home on Friday evening when victory over Plymouth Marjon would make them champions.

On a hot bank holiday afternoon, Millbrook made the perfect start when Tom Payne fired home a 10th minute penalty after Rikki Shepherd had been tripped.

It was 2-0 in the 23rd minute when a right wing cross picked out Shepherd. He brought the ball under control with his right foot and then drilled a left foot shot into the far corner.

And to underline their complete dominance of the first half, Millbrook went 3-0 up two minutes before half-time when Ryan Knight headed in a Jack Wood cross after a corner had only been half cleared.

If 3-0 was not considered good enough for Millbrook to relax, further goals from Payne and Shepherd in the opening five minutes of the second half made sure of it.

Wendron pulled a goal back in the 58th minute and had a 15-minute spell when they could have added a couple more goals but Konstantin Andrejenko pulled off several excellent saves as his team-mates appeared to turn off.

But Millbrook recovered their composure in the last 15 minutes and added a sixth goal from substitute Jimmi Cooke 10 minutes from time.

The final whistle sparked celebrations from the Millbrook players and officials, securing promotion only 14 months after the club was on the brink of extinction because of a financial crisis.
