Plymstock Utd 1 Liskeard Athletic 5

James Lorenz claimed a 20-minute second half hat-trick as Liskeard turned on the style to destroy fourth-placed Plymstock at Dean Cross on Saturday afternoon.

Other goals came from Jarrad Woods and Ben Waters, with at least another half a dozen good opportunities spurned, while the woodwork denied Lorenz of two more goals.

The Blues have now won all six of their games in division one west of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League, yet they are still only third in the table behind Wadebridge and Porthleven, who have played more matches.

If they continue to produce performances as good as this, though, they will again be in the running for the title this season.

Liskeard had a chance to open the scoring after only 16 seconds as Lorenz sent Waters clear, but he sliced his shot wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

The Blues continued to attack in waves and eventually made the breakthrough in the 17th minute when Woods curled in a 20 yard free kick, and Waters doubled the lead four minutes later after goalkeeper Luke Fletcher fumbled a cross.

But over confidence proved costly in the 25th minute when defender Sam Gilbert rejected a simple pass and lost possession on the halfway line, allowing Plymstock to break and Jacob Smale produced a fine finish to reduce the arrears.

Liskeard were forced to start the second half with the injured Woods but his replacement, Macauley Thorp, went on to be a massive influence.

Ben Collins saw a 47th minute effort scrambled off the line and two minutes later Gilbert produced a superb cross from the left which found Tom Cleveland unmarked at the far post, but he volleyed into the side netting.

Liskeard finally made their dominance count in the 62nd minute when a long clearance from Cleveland set Lorenz clear and he outpaced the Plymstock defence before smashing his shot into the net.

Three minutes later it was 4-1 when Collins whipped in a shot from the left and Lorenz got a touch at the near post to deflect the ball into the net.

Lorenz, who fired a shot against the post in the 73rd minute, completed his hat-trick and the scoring eight minutes from time with a sweet right foot shot.

This was a complete performance by Liskeard. Dylan Peel was commanding in central defence, Lyle Johnson and Shaun Jones were excellent in midfield and, of course, Lorenz was virtually unplayable.
