Liskeard Athletic 2 Dobwalls 0

Liskeard need one point from their last two games to be crowned champions of the South West Peninsula League division one west after a hard-fought victory over neighbours Dobwalls at sun-baked Lux Park.

Second half goals from central defenders Adam King and Dylan Peel were enough to clinch three vital points for the Blues to keep them six points clear of Mousehole, who beat Penzance 4-0 earlier in the day.

With only two games to go, Liskeard require a point to clinch the title and they could do it three miles down the road at Dobwalls on Wednesday evening (6.30pm kick-off).

But they know they will be in for another tough battle after finding it difficult to break down a well-organised Dobwalls side who were not without their chances.

In a goalless first half, Liskeard were restricted to three chances but Macauley Thorp (twice) and James Lorenz were unable to finish.

For their part, Dobwalls came close when Stuart Morgan tried his luck from 45 yards after spotting Liskeard keeper Josh Gilbert off his line, while the visitors had two strong appeals for penalties in the last five minutes of the half, both waved away by the referee.

Liskeard needed to raise their game in the second half and they did so from the off, with Thorp coming desperately close to converting Lorenz’s pass in the 50th minute.

But two minutes later they made the breakthrough when a corner from Jarrad Woods caused panic in the Dobwalls six yard box and after Peel’s first effort was cleared off the line, King was on hand to turn the ball into the net from close range.

Five minutes later it was 2-0 when a long cross from Woods, out wide on the left, picked out the unmarked Peel on the far side of the penalty area and he beat Dobwalls keeper Toby Chapman to the ball and it ended up rolling into the net.

Dobwalls continued to push for a goal and they thought they had one in the 78th minute but the linesman was flagging for offside and the effort was ruled out.

The visitors had a good case for a penalty five minutes from time when a Liskeard defender handled in the penalty area but again the referee said no.

So Liskeard have gone through the season unbeaten at Lux Park in the league – and they now look to two away games at Dobwalls and Wendron to get the point they need.
