Leaders Liskeard Athletic will be putting their long unbeaten record on the line on Saturday when they make the long journey to Mousehole in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League.

The Blues boast 14 wins and three draws from their 17 division one west fixtures – but fifth-placed Mousehole are expected to provide the biggest threat yet to that record.

Liskeard’s joint manager Martin Hodge said: ‘We are looking forward to Saturday’s game. The lads know it is going to be a tough one.

‘But we are confident that if we put in a good performance we can come away with a result.’

Mousehole are one of the three sides to have held Liskeard to a draw this season. They pushed the Blues all the way at Lux Park on November 24 in a thriller which ended 1-1.

They have won their last four league games, scoring 20 goals in the process and conceding only one.

But Liskeard have also won their last four, hitting 30 goals and conceding two.

There is little to choose between two very good teams – but Liskeard are eight points ahead of them in the table with a game in hand.

They travel to Trungle Parc in confident mood after their 3-0 victory over Penzance at Lux Park last Saturday lifted them over Wadebridge Town, who suffered a shock 5-1 home defeat to Dobwalls.

Hodge said: ‘Saturday was a good result for us but the best thing about it for me was the clean sheet and the way we played.’

Saltash United are involved in a big match of their own on Saturday when they travel to St Austell in the premier division’s match of the day.

Saltash boss Matt Cusack said: ‘Saturday will see two teams trying to make an assault on the top four and the game could go a long way in deciding which of us does that.

‘St Austell have been in brilliant home form, scoring seven against Plymouth Parkway and five against Tavistock.

‘So it will be important to get off to a good tight start and grow into the game.

‘They will be aware of our threat as we are theirs. After last Saturday’s disappointment this Saturday can’t come soon enough.’

The Ashes were held to a 1-1 draw by Bodmin and Cusack said: ‘We left the field frustrated as it was an opportunity missed.

‘We were unusually lacklustre in front of goal in the first half and squandered three golden goal scoring opportunities.

‘After the break we scored early and believed we would then go on as we had the previous week.

‘Bodmin scored from a counter attack two minutes later to restore parity and despite making three substitutions, the winning goal eluded us. Full credit to Bodmin, who were dogged in the execution of their game plan.’
