Callington Town were praised by Plymouth Argyle after an entertaining pre-season friendly at the Marsh on Tuesday night.

A spokesman for the League One club said: ‘Thanks to Callington for rolling out the green carpet for us. It was a good game and they were fine hosts.

‘We wish Callington all the best for their South West Peninsula League season.’

Argyle predictably ran out comfortable winners with Luke Jephcott and Alex Fletcher scoring twice, with other goals added by Joel Grant, Cameron Sangster and Alex Battle.

The Pilgrims included a mixture of Under 18s, reserves and first team squad members, with Tafari Moore, Joel Grant, Lionel Ainsworth and Peter Grant, who captained the side, representing the latter category.

Jephcott, played in from deep by one of a series of exquisite passes from Grant, turned swiftly and fired home to give Argyle an early lead.

Fletcher volleyed in a near-post shot to Joel Grant’s cross to extend the lead, before Grant also got on the scoresheet with a fine shot.

Jephcott tapped home after good work by Fletcher for number four, and Sangster stepped up to convert a penalty as the Pilgrims went into half-time 5-0 ahead.

Fletcher added his second six minutes after the break with a looping header following Ainsworth’s cross. Late in the game, substitute Alex Battle completed the scoring.
