Tribute T20 Kernow Crash Finals Day (semi-final)

Wadebridge (124-6, 20 overs)

Callington (128-4, 19.2 overs)

CALLINGTON Cobras moved into the final of the T20 Kernow Crash Finals Day with a six-wicket victory over Wadebridge Warriors in the morning semi-final, writes David Sillifant.

After Wadebridge won the toss, openers James Turpin and Matt Butler got off to a flying start, before the momentum slowed as they struggled to 124-6 off their 20 overs.

In response, Kian Burns showed why he has been picked for Cornwall as he hammered 36 from just 18 balls, before Dan Davis and Rhys Davies guided them to victory.

Callington were missing opening bowler Sam Pengelly, and he was replaced by Nick Parker as Joe White chose to beef up the batting.

Rob Mutch’s first over went for 10 as James Turpin – the leading run scorer in qualifying – pulled him over mid-wicket and out of the ground.

Dan Davis was brought on for the third over, but the dangerous Matt Butler took him for 12.

At 27-0 off just three overs, Callington needed a wicket and it came two balls later as Turpin was trapped leg before wicket by Mutch (1-18) for 12.

Butler whacked another four at the start of Davis’ second, but later in the over he holed out to Luke Brenton on the deep mid-wicket boundary for 18.

The next three overs harnessed just nine runs as Wadebridge reached 63-2 at the halfway stage.

Former county captain Matt Robins (18) was gradually getting into his stride but he was bowled by the returning Petherbridge at 71-3.

Kelvin Snell played several nice shots, but at the other end, Tom McLachlan struggled to score freely.

He made just 14 off 21 balls before he spooned an Aidan Libby full-toss in the air to be caught and bowled.

At 106-4 with 12 balls to go, Wadebridge needed a big finish. However it didn’t materialise as Wilson (1) was caught by Luke Brenton at long-off off Davis, before Snell was caught on the extra cover boundary by Burns, having made 42.

The final over produced 14 as Elliott Dunnett made 12 off five balls, but 124-6 was a disappointment considering the start they had.

Callington skipper White promised his side would continue to attack when they batted, and in Burns and Libby they have two fearless openers capable of winning a game by themselves.

Burns hit off-spinner Charlie Ellis over mid-wicket for six in the opening over, before Libby and Burns both found the boundary off Wilson’s first.

The third over fetched 17 as Burns launched Ellis for two fours and a six over cover.

Burns struck successive boundaries at the start of the fourth and did likewise in the fifth over, before he was bowled for 36 off Dunnett’s fourth delivery.

With 51 on the board after just 4.4 overs, Callington were well ahead of the rate.

They did lose Libby for a sprightly 15 when he was bowled by Robins (1-15) looking to sweep.

Dan Davis was in superb form in the group stage, and he and wicketkeeper Rhys Davies (28no) took their time.

Davis struck six boundaries in his 43 before he was well caught at backward-point by Matt Jolliffe, and although Luke Brenton (1) was lbw second ball to Wilson (2-31), Callington went into the final over needing five.

Davies ensured there was no real drama as he struck successive boundaries off Wilson to send the East Cornwall side through.
