Fourth-placed Tideford sent Cornwall League division five east leaders Buckland Monachorum to their first defeat of the season on Saturday.

Buckland, chasing 148 for victory, crashed to 111 all out with Chris Bennett claiming five for 49 from his 10 overs and Mark Everett finishing with three for four off 3.2 overs.

Earlier, opener Dave Holland had top scored with 66 in Tideford’s total of 147.

On another scorcher of a day, Tideford had won the toss and decided to bat first.

After the early loss of Everett, Justin Kidd joined Holland at the crease and they put on 57 before Kidd was bowled of an inside edge for 27.

This was only the start of this calamitous over for Tideford as a further three wickets fell. The lucky bowler was S Hoad and it included a hat-trick, all bowled.

Tideford never recovered from this and it was only an excellent innings from Holland and a useful contribution at the end from Steve Ford (11) that the innings had some respectively.

Five players were out for a duck. For Buckland, Hoad finished with four for 32, T Halloran three for 27 and skipper Dan Rogers two for 44.

Buckland came to the crease full of confidence that another victory was on the horizon, but the Tideford bowlers had other ideas.

Bennett, with debutant Richie King, bowled an excellent line and length and although the Buckland batsman were positive in their approach they were losing wickets at regular intervals.

At the mid stage of the innings they had reached 77 but had lost six wickets, with Bennett taking five of them.

The change bowlers of Ford and Everett kept the pressure on the batsman and the latter took his third wicket, bowling top scorer T Scott of his pads for 42, finishing the innings on 111.

This was an unexpected win when considering two of Tideford top players were called into the first team at short notice.

Darren Shaw stood in a captain at short notice while youngsters AJ and Sydney Bond and Jake Bennet contributed in the fielding efforts.
