Cheesewring’s 2017 cricket season finally got under way at Bridford in the Teign Valley after the first game against Cornwall Over 50s became a victim to the weather.

In a low scoring game, Cheesewring came out on top thanks mainly to fine bowling performances from Andy Wills, Rob Piper and Chris Walmington, ably assisted by skipper Ali Skeet and debutant Tim Dean.

Darren Piper and Kyle Maslen were the main run scorers but in a nervous finish Tim Dean and Chris Walmington saw them home.

Details. Bridford 90 (S Henderson 27, J Lockwood 10, R Piper 5-23, C Walmington 2-4, K Maslen 2-9, T Dean 1-25). Cheesewring 91-7 (D Piper 33, K Maslen 16, M Robinson 2-15, S Henderson 2-22, T Gard 1-5, T Edwards 1-17, D Buckley 1-15. Cheesewring won by 3 wkts.

Cheesewring entertained Yealmpton in their first home fixture of the season at Upton Cross and after winning the toss stuck the visitors in to bat on a damp wicket after overnight rain.

Superb early bowling from Andy Wills and Rob Piper had Yealmpton reeling at 10 for six and a dropped catch. It should have been game over but with Maslen getting injured and having to be a player short, the visitors recovered to 166 all out.

In reply, after a good start, Cheesewring crumbled to some good Yelverton bowling for 68 all out.

Details. Yealmpton 166 (C Teague 48, G Speed 35, B Teague 28, R Piper 4-40, A Wills 2-7, C Walmington 2-17, T Dean 2-36). Cheesewring 68 (D PIper 18, T Dean 16, B Teague 3-11, S Caunter 3-20, A Dunsford 2-15). Yealmpton won by 98 runs.
