Today (Friday) Liskeard Badminton Club’s head coach Jenny Marchant and coach Nigel Collins will be travelling to Birmingham for the National Badminton Awards after being nominated by their governing body, Badminton England, for Club of the Year.
This comes on the back of the club winning Junior Club of the Year at the recent Cornwall Sports Awards.
The awards follow a medal-winning weekend for three members the club.
Nikki Welch, 23, from Pensilva made went to Motherwell for the Scottish leg of the 4 Nations Para-Badminton Series where she won two silver medals and one gold.
Cara Collins, 13, of Liskeard, took part in Paignton at the Devon U15 Silver tournament and won the girls’ singles event.
Ellie Reed, 14 of St Neot, also competing at Paignton, picked up a bronze medal in the singles event and a silver medal in the doubles with her partner Lucy Cooper from Devon.
The three girls are training for forthcoming tournaments; Ellie and Cara are competing in Warwickshire, Bournemouth and Oxford over the next three weekends. Next month they will travel to their respective English National Championship events, Ellie in Redbridge, Essex, for the U15s and Cara in Milton Keynes at the National Badminton Centre for the U13 event.
Nikki’s next event will be the 4 Nations Para-Badminton English Championships at Sheffield in June with her long-term goal being the 2017 Special Olympics National Games, also in Sheffield.
