ILFRACOMBE Pilot Gig Club broke the Cornish grip on championship events with victory in the Men's Veterans' Championships at the two-day Saltash Regatta. In a weekend of racing, organised by the Saltash-based Caradon club, the North Devon men won the over-40s' section, leading Weymouth and Coverack across the line. Top clubs of the day were, unsurprisingly, Falmouth and their West Cornwall neighbours, Mount's Bay. Falmouth won the Mixed Super Vets, for the over-50s, getting to the gun first ahead of Rame and Caradon, and doubled up with a Women's Super Vets title where they held off the challenge of the Flushing and Mylor crew and Salcombe. Mount's Bay's two successes came in the Mixed Vets over-40s' division, where the crew had Cara-don and Ilfracombe at their stern, and the Women's Vets, where Newquay and Caradon took the other podium places.
