EAST Cornwall youngsters enjoyed success at this year's Cornwall Primary County Cross-Country Champion-ships, which attracted an entry of 360 runners.

The event, held at New-quay Sports Centre, was organised this year by three members of the East Cornwall Harriers club, Revis Crowle, Jenny Nash and Oli Jones.

The four Cornwall sports partnerships – Callington (Arena), Poltair, Mount's Bay and Penryn – each entered teams of 15 children into six races, for Year 4 girls and boys, Year 5 girls and boys and Year 6 girls and boys.

Distances ranged from 1,070 metres for the Year 4's to 1,670 metres for Year 6's.

Conditions were good and produced some fast races, watched by a large number of supportive parents.

Callington's Caitlin Price was first in the Year 5 girls' race, while there were second-place finishes for team-mates Tilly McDowell and Oliver Smart.

Ben Edwards was third behind Smart in the Year 4 boys' event, and Isaac Burden matched that position in the Year 5 boys' race.
