Youth gang hit Looe camp site
An organised break in at a holiday park has prompted Looe police to issue a warning to camp site owners and visitors to be extra vigilant and not to leave valuables inside caravans.
The statement came after eight caravans at the West Wayland site, including one owned by Looe Lions to give the disabled holidays, were broken into by a gang of youths in the early hours of last Friday morning.
The police were alerted at 1am by a call from a holidaymaker who had been disturbed by the noise. Unable to get his mobile phone to work he drove his car to a telephone kiosk outside the camp.
It was discovered that the caravans had been forced open and televisions, videos and other electrical goods had been stolen.
The television had been taken from the Lions owned caravan, which is one of two they own in the Looe area, the latter being new this year.
The police are following several lines of enquiry into the incident and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
They also want to hear from people who have been offered cheap TV's and other equipment.
Police Constable Cox said the thieves were targeting specific items, in this instance electrical goods, and it was the type of organised crime which has happened in the area before.
'With the season picking up we would urge people on camp sites to be extra careful' he said. 'Keys to caravans should not be left in cars, all windows should be firmly closed before leaving a caravan, and the doors always locked.'
