CITIZENS of Liskeard and district, there are two exhibitions currently being displayed at Stuart House, which are of profound importance to the future. First is Liskeard – the Next 25 Years, which is a visionary study in depth with plans and photos to illustrate the findings and proposals of volunteers, led by Liskeard Town Forum, to show a way forward in finding a solution to the challenges and problems we expect to face in the 21st century. This is a unique opportunity to both inform ourselves and a chance to make our own suggestions and comments before formal adoption, carrying hopes that we will be listened to by higher authorities. Detailed written statements are available to take away. This exhibition is located in the Jane Room on the first floor. Second is an exhibition of the principal plans put forward as a formal planning application by Brook Street Properties Ltd for the redevelopment of the Taylors Garage site adjoining Stuart House. The proposals comprise 13 flats in a four-storey building, with three retail units on the ground floor. The development extends over almost the entire site area with no on site provision for parking or servicing. The height and density of the development appears to overwhelm Stuart House and Kivells, which adjoin the site. Furthermore, it would have a profound affect on the appearance of Barras Street and its western approach. Also the famous Magnolia tree at the rear of Stuart House Garden, but not part of it, seems to be under threat. This exhibition is located in the Rowse Room on the second floor. One and all are urged to visit these exhibitions. Your views on Liskeard – the Next 25 Years can be made known by writing to the Town Clerk, No 3 West Street, Liskeard; and for the garage site plans, letters should be sent to Ms Sue Walters, head of development and building control, Luxstowe House, Liskeard and/or the chairman of Stuart House Trust at Barras Street, Liskeard.
