THERE has been great concern this week over an incident which took place on the seafront on Tuesday afternoon, in which some youngsters put themselves in great danger.

Because of the weather conditions, the harbourmaster Ted Webb, closed off the quay leading to the Banjo Pier, in the interests of public safety. There is an iron gate which he can pull across and lock. However, a group of young people climbed over it, and ran along the quay, towards the Banjo Pier, where they were jumping over the waves which were pouring over the sides.

An alarmed resident who saw what was happening from her home at Hannafore, rang the harbour office immediately at about 4.40pm, but by the time Mr Webb had run down to the seafront the youngsters had gone.

The harbour office said the youngsters had not only put themselves in grave danger, but had also behaved irresponsibly, as emergency services such as Looe's inshore lifeboat, would have been called out in these conditions had one of them been dragged off the pier and into the sea. The harbour is now looking into their legal position over access to the quay when the gate is shut, to find out if they are able to issue a prosecution warning if people climb over it.
