A music-led protest will take place tomorrow in support of South East Cornwall's best-known youth centre. Livewire Youth Music Project, based at The Waterfront in Saltash, has received only 75 per cent of its funding this year from Cornwall Youth Services. It fears all of its support could be withdrawn, leaving it without its staff of three and only volunteers to run the centre. It would then be reliant on its own fundraising. Livewire is used by young people from all over Caradon and Plymouth. The opportunities provided have been enjoyed by hundreds of youngsters, many of them vulnerable. Membership has grown to around 1,400, with some events attracting more than 200. Livewire changed from a standard youth club into a specialised youth music provision in 2000, with support from Sir Richard Carew Pole and celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Pete Townsend and Phil Collins. It has a recording studio, teaching rooms, and a state-of-the-art live performance venue. Cornwall Council's youth work co-ordinator Andy Rance said: 'I am determined we will not close. So many young people depend on us. Our protest will prove young people are not apathetic and want to do something about this.' The Stop The Cuts to Youth Services Music Protest is tomorrow (Saturday) at Livewire from 11am-5pm. There will be two live music stages, guest speakers stalls and food.
