BRIGHT sunshine brought out a good attendance for the 93rd Prime Stock Show in Liskeard, which is always traditionally the first of the shows in the South West calendar.

Among the local winners was a delighted Milly Bersey of Downderry, who won first prize in the sheep native breed class with her Hampshire Down Cross.

For 12-year-old Milly it was a double delight as she was presented with her great-grandfather's trophy, the RA Bersey Cup.

Well-known farmers Nick and Elizabeth Bunkum of Merrymeet took the cup for the best local animal, while the overall championship went out of county this year to Lewis Cook of Ivybridge. For the tenth year in succession, Amy Payne of Newquay took the sheep championship.

Show president Ann Bray-Rounsevell of Duloe said it had been a good, enjoyable day all round.

'Cattle and sheep classes are slightly up and of excellent quality,' she said, 'and the domestic classes are wonderful. I wish to thank show secretaries Jill Chapman (cattle and sheep) and Jackie Martin (domestic) for their stirling work.'

Mayor Tony Powell said: 'After the disappointment of the cancellation of the Liskeard Show, it is all credit to our farmers that not only did they support the re-scheduled date in September, but have also turned out again today. They are to be congratulated.'
