Only two schoolboys attended an audition at the Ashtorre Centre in the hope of playing the part of the young Isambard Kingdom Brunel in a re- enactment of four periods in Brunel's life – and they were both from Plymouth. Devonport High School pupil James King, 12, got the part and 13-year-old Jeff Parlett, a pupil at Tavistock College, was promised another part in the production, which will be held at Saltash Waterside on April 9, Brunel's birthday. Both boys are members of Stage Coach Drama School in Plymouth. Christopher Batters, of CB Productions, who has written the Brunel Remembered script, was hoping more young people would come forward to take part in the production and said it was disappointing that no young people from Saltash went to audition last Friday. But he said he was very pleased with the two who had auditioned at the Ashtorre Centre, Waterside. The production will be staged on the green next to the Union Inn, with the Royal Albert Bridge as a natural back drop. Mr Batters, a retired policeman who now lives at Bodmin, was born in Saltash and lived in the town for many years. He was a keen member of Saltash Operatic and Dramatic Society. His grandfather, Ernie Webber, was Mayor of Saltash and his wife was mayoress from 1936 to 1940. Mr Batters has been involved with drama for a number of years and was a founder member of the Bodmin Operatic Society, before he formed his own dramatic production company. The Brunel Remembered production will include three people from Saltash – Kaye Bonner, who will play the part of Sophie Brunel, Isambard's mother; Adrian Chapman, who will play the part of Brunel aged 27 to 39 and Malcolm Down, who will be Brunel aged 51. In four acts the production will have music in between, played by Callington Town Band.
