The campaign for a new entertainment complex in Liskeard got the support of people who attended a public meeting.

About 85 people attended the meeting at the Cornish Ivy in Liskeard on Sunday, called by campaigner Katrina Dawe to discuss the idea of bringing a cinema and entertainment complex to the town.

Everybody who spoke was in support of the campaign with many giving suggestions, advice or examples of other similar, successful projects.

Arts centres in the Devon towns of Torrington and Tavistock were among those put forward as models which could work in a town the size of Liskeard.

Many possible sites for the complex were discussed, including the former Lamellion Hospital building and the former Woolworths building.

The most popular suggestion at the meeting was the idea of incorporating the complex into the planned development of the Cattle Market.

South West Cornwall MP Sheryll Murray said: 'I heard a lot of ideas here today and I support the idea for a cinema in the town. I can understand exactly what you are campaigning for and if a letter of support would help your cause you will get it. I will certainly help you in any way I can,' she told the meeting.

The campaign team has received more than 100 response slips from the meeting and will now use all the feedback to put together a feasibility study before calling another meeting to discuss the study results.

Speaking after the meeting, campaigner Katrina said: 'I feel like it was a very positive meeting. There were some brilliant suggestions, all of which have been taken seriously. From collating the responses it's clear that most people want it at the Cattle Market. I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended and all those who have emailed me. I am encouraged by all the support,' she added.
