Pensilva returned to league action after a six week break when they entertained Railway Beacon in DJM U-16 and won 3-1. The visitors started much the brighter of the two sides and created a couple of half chances in the opening five minutes, both of which were spurned.

The lack of competitive action seemed to take it's toll on the home side and it came as no surprise when Beacon opened the scoring after 12 minutes. This early setback fired the 'Pens' into action and they began to play with real endeavour and commitment, the midfield trio of Joel Key, Gerry Richards and Dan Loftus were particularly influential. It was during this period that the home side began to take control of the game but were frustrated by the offside tactics employed.

Eventually Pensilva were rewarded with a deserved equaliser when Richards received the ball inside the Beacon half. He brushed aside a strong challenge and played a clever one - two with Anthony Chapman before firing a low drive past the 'keeper and into the net.

The scores were level at half time but after the break Pensilva continued to maintain the high tempo that they had played to in the first half and enjoyed long spells of sustained pressure as they advanced on the Beacon goal. Finally the home side scored a second goal thanks to the tireless Chapman, who delivered a great cross that having been fumbled by the keeper was neatly back-heeled home by Key. Pensilva could sense victory and their work rate never dropped and only the cross bar denied Richards as he fired a 25 yard effort. Indeed it was the woodwork that again saved Beacon when Key hit a shot on the turn.

The visitors had no answer to 'Pens' constant barrage and on the rare occasions that they had possession, the home defence coped with any threat and were well marshalled by opposition M-o-M 'Spud' Pocock.

The home team sealed the points when good interplay between Richards and Key resulted in the latter unleashing a superb curling shot from outside the box which flew into the top corner of the net.

The final score was 3-1 and this was an encouraging performance from the home side with every player giving 100%.

After a six week break caused by bad weather and the Christmas holidays, Pensilva U-13s restarted their DJM U-13 Hermes campaign in the best possible way on Saturday with a 3-0 home over visiting Weston Mill.

The first half was a tight midfield battle, but Kieran Bruce picked up an ideal moment to break the deadlock, putting Pensilva one-up two minutes before the interval.

Playing downhill in the second half Pensilva grew in confidence creating frequent chances but were kept at bay by Weston's excellent goalkeeper. However Pens plugged away and were rewarded with two late goals from Adam Hutchings who was nominated man of the match by the opposing manager.

Tom Moore received the home manager's award, but this was a committed, workmanlike performance by the whole team which should provide the foundation for a climb back up the table over the next four months.

This was a DJM U-13 Astor game where Saltash were always going to be the under dogs and the result a foregone conclusion, but the display of grit and determination from the Saltash side lifted this into a classic not to be missed. Elm, starting strongly, and notching their first goal in a little over a minute it left Saltash players looking a little bemused. Fighting back strongly Ashes challenged the Elm players for every ball and forced them to make a number of uncharacteristic errors.

Ashes even created a couple of scoring chances, which had the superior side quarrelling in their raiiks. Working tirelessly in midfield, Clements and Blakeston aided by wingers Thompson and Hodge won more than their fair share of tackles. The strong defence of Hart, Jackets, Bailey and Rutherford with Philp as sweeper closed out the Elm forwards, denying them many chances. The mounting pressure from Elm eventually resulted in two more goals before half time but Tony Jane kept out a number of others with a superb display of goal-keeping.

Five minutes into the second half saw Elm increase their lead but to the delight of the local crowd Ashes replied with an excellently worked goal, Hart threading the ball through to Thompson who squared it for Wright to clinically finish.

Burt and Parker, coming on part way through the second half for Ashes. worked tirelesslv but towards the end Elm added two further goals against the tiring home side. All credit to the Saltash side for a brilliant display of courage and determination.

St Cleer U-14s entertained Saltash United juniors, and in an exciting U-14 Grenville game drew 4-4.

Saltash playing with the wind took a five minute lead with a long range free kick which beat keeper Paul Hooper, deputising for the injured Robin Brown. St Cleer struggled to find any form in the first half, but equalised when a throw in from Martyn Hake found Craig Walton who turned and crossed for Craig Hamson to score at the far post. Saltash playing some good football, raced to a 3-1 half time lead.

St Cleer improved in the second period and their battling qualities were rewarded when Hake hit a tremendous shot from 25 yards to give the Saltash keeper no chance.

St Cleer's chance of a good result looked doomed when Saltash scored their fourth goal with 10 minutes left but a fine ball from Neil Davey saw Hamson score from an acute angle for a fine finish.

With the seconds ticking away, St Cleer were awarded a free kick from wide on the left and Hake scored a Beckham type free kick to level the score at 4-4. This was not one of St Cleer's best performances but manager Brian Bunny was pleased with a point in the end. Lone striker Craig Hamson who battled and caused the Saltash defence all sorts of problems, won man of the match award from both managers. This week St Cleer travel to Mayflower.
