CORNWALL SENIOR CUP Liskeard Athletic 4 Perranwell 2 (aet) THE Blues managed to pull themselves back from the precipice of yet another disaster as they squeaked through to the third round of the Cornwall Senior Cup. Things have not gone remotely according to plan so far this season for Liskeard, so one can only imagine what the long-suffering fans must have been thinking as Perranwell led 2-0 with 37 minutes to go. Just to help the palpable sense of drama, two of the spectators in the crowd were Leigh Cooper and Tony Richardson, rumoured to be the subject of an approach from the Blues for their managerial vacancy. The Blues actually started the tie well, creating several chances, but as has often happened this season, they failed to put the ball in the net and once more were duly punished. In the 25th minute, Josh Hulme floated a free-kick in the direction of the home goal and watched goalkeeper Simon Zinn deflect the ball into his own net to give the Jollys Combination side the lead. Undaunted, Liskeard kept plugging away, but more chances came and went and the visitors made the most of the situation when a 63rd minute 25-yard chip from Casey Adams doubled their lead. By now it was all-or-nothing for the Blues and only 15 minutes were remaining when Chris Wright finally broke through to fire a 15-yard drive low into the net. Four minutes from time, James Alexander saw his free-kick rebound off the woodwork and it appeared all was lost until Blues' stand-in captain Kevin Robinson took a hand. Deep into injury-time, Alexander floated in a free-kick and Robinson headed the ball home to necessitate extra time. Now Liskeard finally had some momentum and showed the better side of their character to seal the tie with a 105th-minute Wright shot and, fittingly, a 114th-minute strike from Alexander. 'It was good to see the character of the side eventually show through,' said Blues coach Paul Goodwin. 'I think we played all the football for the 120 minutes and were eventually rewarded with the victory we deserved,' he added. If messrs Cooper and Richardson do take over at Lux Park – and no-one was saying anything after the game – then this display will have given them food for thought.
