CHILDREN enjoyed a day of stories, reading and fun to celebrate World Book Day.

Some schools encouraged pupils to dress up as characters from a favourite story, and storytelling sessions were held.

As the event fell on St Piran's Day, there were lots of Cornish themes and Trelawny was sung.

At saltash.net community school, deputy headteacher Nick Scantlebury dressed as Tom Bowcock from The Mousehole Cat – one of many costumes donned by staff.

Students from the Trematon Zone went to school dressed as favourite book characters.

A display on 'banned books' relayed the message of how powerful the written word can be and a 'Mad Hatter's Tea Party' organised by librarian Matt Coot was a fitting celebration to promote a love of reading.

Pupils across South East Cornwall were given a £1 voucher which could be put towards a book or used to purchase one of several special £1 World Book Day children's books available from bookshops.
