ARTS volunteers have organised their own mini-music festival for the end of the month.

Calstock Arts has set up Women In Jazz for the weekend of Friday to Sunday, April 27 to 29.

The plan is to recreate some of the atmosphere of the jazz and blues festival that was popular in the village, mixing top names with local performers.

On the Friday, 10 of the UK’s leading female musicians will combine to play new music from women composers.

Leader Issie Barratt’s Interchange Dectet includes the likes of trumpeter Yazz Ahmed, singer Brigitte Beraha and saxophonist Tori Freestone.

Their combined CVs include performing with the London Symphony Orchestra, touring with the singer Seal and playing for Ballet Rambert.

Interchange Dectet will be performing 10 specially commissioned pieces.

The Saturday will see the return of The Printmakers to Calstock Arts.

They were last seen performing there to a near full-house during a previous festival.

They aim to cross the boundaries that traditionally separate jazz, folk and the contemporary music world.

On the Sunday afternoon, there will be a Jazz Diva Showcase – a free performance by singers Jo Bell, Tina Learmonth and Lou Phillips with donations requested in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK.
