The new Davidstow awards at the Royal Cornwall Show are to be judged on the total protein produced by a dairy cow from a herd in Devon or Cornwall which gains the highest placed position in competition (firsts, seconds and thirds).

It was natural to mark the 50th anniversary with something special at the Royal Cornwall Show, said Brian Eddy, general manager at Davidstow. He said:

"We are Cornish creamery and very proud of our product which is retailed throughout the country, advertising Davidstow and made in Cornwall.

"We wanted something to show the significance of quality milk and in particular the protein content and the impact that has on the manufacture of quality cheese."

First prize will be £250 and the winner will receive a specially commissioned trophy.

The runner-up will win £100.

The trophy to be commissioned from a local artist will be "something out of the ordinary - we want it to be appropriate to the event.

Something decidedly dairy," said Brian. "It will be designed in the shape of an old fashioned milk churn."
