ARE you curious about learning the Cornish language – or Kernewek?
If so, the Cornish Language Association is delighted to be able to return to meeting in person, post-COVID pandemic, for its annual Language Weekend which will be held this year at the St Austell Arts Centre from Friday, April 22 to Sunday, April 24, starting at 9.50am each morning.
The weekend will involve language classes for all abilities, and especially welcomes anyone wishing to experience the Cornish Language for the first time - no previous knowledge required for these ‘Flamm Nowydh’ (‘Brand New’) sessions.
There will be a special programme for children and families as well as activities for more fluent speakers, a quiz in Cornish, a guided walk through St Austell, and beer tasting, films and music events on the Friday and Saturday evenings.
This is known as the ‘Cornish Weekend’ – or Pennseythen Gernewek.
Andrew Johnson, one of the Pennseythen Gernewek organisers, said: “The Pennseythen is one of the highlights of the year for Cornish culture. It offers learning, entertainment, and a chance to hear and use Cornish.
“We’re delighted to be able to resume this annual event, which has inspired a lot of activity and creativity over the years. We’d encourage everyone to give it a try and if you’d like to learn more about Cornish - you’ll be welcome at some of our friendly, affordable workshops.
