The Torpoint Ferry was one of many places across Britain that were visited by an extraordinary art installation commemorating the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the Battle of the Somme yesterday.
Volunteers in World War One dress silently walked through towns, cities and transport hubs across the country. If approached, they handed over a card bearing the name of one of 19,240 soldiers who died on July 1 1916.
Nearly 100 people had trained in total secrecy at Plymouth’s Theatre Royal to play their part in the event, called We Are Here Because We’re Here. It caused a storm on social media under the hashtag #wearehere.
