CORNWALL SENIOR CUP SECOND ROUND Camelford 3 Torpoint Ath 5 (aet) TORPOINT Athletic were left sighing with relief after this narrow escape at Camelford, who must have thought a 'giant-killing' was in the making after they took a 3-1 lead. The Carlsberg South Western League side were aware of the potential pitfalls of a trip to a side from the East Cornwall Premier League, but they failed to take the necessary precautions and almost paid the price. Camelford shook them in the early stages and were rewarded when they took a 25th-minute lead after Alex Ahearn threaded the ball through for Darren Fryer, who applied a cool finish from ten yards. The goal woke Torpoint up, albeit just temporarily, as Steve Sims' cross found Darren Edwards, who fired home from five yards, five minutes later. The visitors once again relaxed and Camelford were in no mood to let a chance slip. They were back in the lead eight minutes later as Patrick Rushton crossed the ball in for Phil Brown to head past Joey Syndecombe. Worse was to follow as Torpoint huffed and puffed after the break, and it was not until Camelford grabbed a third goal in the 69th-minute that they finally appeared to gain some urgency in their play. Adie Jeff was allowed to run from the midfield before thundering in a 30-yard drive that flew into the top corner of the visitors' net past a helpless Syndecombe. The response was almost immediate as, within two minutes, Torpoint had pulled a goal back and at last it was game-on. James Cooke took matters into his own hands with a solo run through the middle before drawing home 'keeper Jimmy Vernon and steering the ball low into the corner of the home net. Camelford's hopes were further dashed four minutes from time when Sims sent over a corner that found Ben Waters, who headed home to take the tie into extra-time. Torpoint required just one minute of the extra period to take the lead as Tony Biddle headed in a Waters cross. Waters completed his personal demolition job five minutes from the end when he was on hand to tap the ball in after a great run, and cross, from Chris Todd. Illogan 0 Saltash Utd 4 ASHES boss Tim Halford was satisfied with his Carlsberg South Western League outfit's performance as they brushed aside the unbeaten Jolly's Combination League leaders to rightly take their place in the next round. 'We went into the unknown on Saturday to take on a side on top form, but the lads acquitted themselves very well; we stuck to our principles of playing football and deservedly won the game,' said a proud manager. Halford did have words of praise for the Ashes' hosts when he added: 'They (Illogan) will be a useful addition to the new South West Peninsula League as they have a good side and excellent facilities.' Saltash must have been anxious going into this tie that could rightly be placed in the potential 'banana skin' category, but they began positively, almost taking a second- minute lead. Ryan McClements' clever dummy left Carl Pender racing down the right flank before squaring the ball into the path of the onrushing Daley Simpson, but his first-time shot from 15 yards was well-saved by 'keeper Danny Burrows. The goal that sent Ashes on their way finally came after 24 minutes when Danny Lewis fired in a left- wing cross that found Mark Chapman. He cut in and sent a diving header across Burrows and inside the far post. A second goal followed, nine minutes later, after a sustained spell of Ashes pressure that had seen them force four corners in quick succession. It was from the last of these corners that Mark Chapman's inswinging effort sailed over everyone, including Burrows, and into the far corner of the net. Illogan are unbeaten in the League for a reason, and they hit back in the dying moments of the half; defender Darren Holsey should have hit the target from eight yards but his header flew over the bar. Ashes had to be thankful to Lee Carew on the stroke of half-time as James Martin found himself with the time and space to pick his spot, but the Ashes 'keeper threw himself in front of the home striker to block his shot. The opening quarter of the second half was mainly in midfield, but the one exception came when the impressive Nicky Medlin sent a volley screaming over Carew's bar. Saltash replied, with the impressive Simpson sending in a 25-yard drive that just cleared the intersection of post and bar before they finally wrapped the tie up 13 minutes from time. A short corner, between Chapman and Danny Lewis resulted in the latter's over-hit cross reaching McClements on the opposite wing. The Ashes striker sent an early ball back into the danger area where Toby Clarke arrived to shoot into the roof of the net from 15 yards. The final goal came two minutes from time, and it was a milestone for Lewis as it was his first for the club. Dave Smith threaded a long pass through for Lewis, who beat the offside trap and placed a low drive into Burrows' left-hand corner. Penzance 1 St Blazey 2 THE Green and Blacks were well aware that this Cup tie would not be easy after a recent League visit to Penlee Park had seen them rescue a point thanks to a very late Mark Vercesi penalty. Blazey might have had the majority of the possession throughout the game, but they were not their usual potent selves up front and they could have been made to pay. The Magpies enjoyed their best spell of the game early in the second half as Paul Cox sent a header just wide of Gary Penhaligon's goal. The former Argyle goalkeeper then had to produce a fine save to keep out Karl Turner's fierce drive before Blazey finally broke the deadlock on the hour, Nick Campbell firing home from the edge of the area. The comfort of a two-goal cushion was attained five minutes later as Dominic Richardson headed home, but the visiting supporters were left with an anxious end to the tie after Mark George had pulled a goal back five minutes from time. George's superb shot-on-the-turn was the signal for the Magpies to throw caution to the wind, leaving Blazey desperately defending their slender lead. Cox sent a clear shooting chance wide of Penhaligon's goal, and Danny Magee's effort grazed the visitors' crossbar, before the referee's whistle signalled Blazey's passage into the next round. q q q WEEKEND PREVIEWS CORNWALL SENIOR CUP SECOND ROUND Liskeard Athletic will have a second attempt at playing their Cornwall Senior Cup second-round tie against Jolly's Combination side Holmans at Lux Park today (2.30 pm). Blues' player/manager Dave Leonard has the bonus of a full-strength squad available, which includes himself. 'We have played 12 League games and four or five Cup games – and that is frustrating as there is only so much training you can do and it will never be a substitute for a match atmosphere,' he said. Liskeard (from): Zinn, Hawke, A Cusack, Matthews, Nancarrow, Morrison-Hill, Harvey, Alexander, Parnell, Baker, Price, M Cusack, Morris, Robinson, Burton, Leonard.
LAST week's postponement certainly did not help Callington Town as they will be without striker Lee Crook for the visit of Falmouth Town to the Ginster's Marshfield Parc. Crook is away on annual leave, and manager Geoff Battams admited: 'That will be a blow to us.' Battams also has Nick Yeo rated extremely doubtful as he is still suffering from a recurrence of his knee injury. Callington (from): Johnson, L McPherson, G Jones, A McPherson, Discombe, Murdoch, Martin, Zalick, Sully, Gerry, Rathfelder, Jefferis, King, Yeo, Daly, A. Jones, Battams.
MILLBROOK boss Mark Jones will be hoping that last weekend's postponement will have given John Harris and James Boon the extra time required to attain fitness for the trip to Newquay. Harris has been suffering with a hamstring, while a damaged groin has been Boon's trouble. Joe Smith is another player to benefit from the break as he has been able to get some serious training in, while Jones awaits news as to whether Rob Souness has to work. CARLSBERG SOUTH WESTERN LEAGUE BOLITHO Park stages one of only two Carlsberg South Western League games when League leaders Plymouth Argyle entertain reigning champions Bodmin Town. Youth manager Stuart Gibson might be seeing out his notice at Home Park, but that will not prevent him from working hard to leave his under-18s in a good position before he travels to Norway.
