Saltash has been offered the chance to host a major European water-ski championship in 2002, following last year's successful national water ski event in the town.

The approach came in a letter from the President of the Euro Racing Council Mike Waterman and is a direct result of the way last year's event was organised by Saltash Festival 2000 Committee.

Mr Waterman was so pleased by the welcome the skiers got in Saltash that he feels the town is an ideal venue for the week-long event in 2002.

There would also be a European one-day event next year as well as a repeat of the British Championships this year.

The news was given to a meeting of Saltash Festival Committee on Monday by Chairman Sue Hooper.

'It's wonderful news', she said. 'We are welcoming it cautiously because we know there are all kinds of things which would need doing for the event to go ahead. But everyone is very pleased. It's great news for the town.'

Mrs Hooper said the event would need to be held in partnership with Plymouth and with involvement from the Saltash Partnership, Caradon council, the town council and various other bodies.

It would involve four race days with seven categories of competition. Teams would come from France, Belgium, Italy, Holland, Spain, Austria and Great Britain and bring with them support staff and a considerable number of supporters and their families.

The Saltash Festival Committee were thrilled last year when they were asked if the town and river could host a British National Water Ski championships, the first time such as event has been held on the Tamar.
