Town councillors have hit out at a guide which criticised the water quality at one of South East Cornwall's most popular beaches.

East Looe beach was one of two in the area – Seaton the other – to be graded a 'fail' in the latest Good Beach Guide by The Marine Conservation Society (MCS).

According to the MCS the result means the beach failed to meet European mandatory standards for minimum water quality.

However, councillors in the town dispute the claim pointing out that East Looe beach has scored well in weekly water quality tests carried out by the Environment Agency.
