Anglers coming to Cornwall on holiday run the risk of being caught out by new EU regulations on bass stocks, warns the owner of a fishing tackle shop. Ellis Trinder, of Fishing Mayhem, Liskeard, said most tourists who enjoy fishing will not know, unless told, that the number of bass they are allowed to catch is now restricted. Beginning from January this year, recreational anglers are not allowed to keep any bass they catch up until June 30 when the catch and release scheme begins. From July 1 until December 31, anglers are only allowed to catch and keep one bass per day. If they are caught breaking these rules, they could be subject to fines. Mr Trinder said: ‘There has not been enough publicity about this. Most believe the fishing quotas are only to do with commercial fleets such as the one out of Looe. Even local anglers I have spoken to were not aware of the new EU ruling.
