Volunteers have helped to clear a bridleway in a nature reserve in South East Cornwall while looking after a rare native species.

The path on Kit Hill, near Callington, also a popular route for walkers, needed strimming because of all the brambles and summer growth.

However, power tools would have destroyed the Cornish bladderseed plants which are found among the more common plants, said countryside ranger Jenny Hesketh.

Armed with secateurs, scythes, forks and hedge trimmers, six volunteers, from the Tesco store in Callington, and their families spent a hot morning hacking back the overgrowth.

Tesco manager Saffron Ray said: ‘We were delighted to support Jenny’s conservation efforts, while helping to improve access.’
