The village of Forder attracted a large crowd of people for the annual outdoor carol service and switch on of the Christmas lights on Saturday evening. It was a cold but dry evening, and, despite not having the traditional Christmas tree this year, the lights were arranged around an ordinary tree growing by the side of the creek. It was the first time Forder had not had their Christmas tree. Joe Hall, president of the Forder Community and Conservation Association, explained that a new 12- volt lighting system was being used and a number of members felt it would be 'greener' to make use of an existing tree. Mona Tomaszewska-Honywill, patron of the association, switched on the lights followed by the carol service, which was officiated by the Rev Alan Butler. Lessons were read by Mrs Pam Parsons and seven- year-old Georgina Marson. Music was provided by John Honywill on piano and a group of players on various other instruments. Mr Hall welcomed everyone and, after the service, Father Christmas arrived on a special decorated vehicle to give presents to the children. The first prize winner in the draw was town cllr Colin Riches, who received a TV set.
