Residents have the chance to comment on a £145,000 road improvement scheme. The plans for Callington town centre will be funded by Tesco as part of the planning permission for its new store.
Callington Town Council had hoped the improvements would be finished by the time the store opened in August but it has been delayed.
The scheme will include a one-way system along Well Street, Tanyard Lane, Church Street and Fore Street, which would provide room for wider footways and more kerbside parking and loading bays.
It would also see new traffic lights – with controlled pedestrian crossings – at the junction of Saltash Road and Tavistock Road at the far end of Fore Street, which would be pedestrianised. Cornwall Council is now taking the scheme forward through the various stages of design, consultation and construction.
Andrew Long, Cornwall councillor for Callington, said: 'I am pleased to see this has finally come to the consultation stage. This is a major project for the town and I hope that many members of our town will take part in the process. If it is supported, I hope that the Highways department can move forward quickly so we can get these improvements in place as early as possible in the new year.'
Vernon Anderson, Callington town clerk, commented: 'For many years now Callington Town Council has campaigned to eliminate illegal parking in Fore Street and the surrounding streets by providing a one-way system that will facilitate further on-street parking and a pedestrianised area. By doing so it is envisaged that there will be an increase of visitors to patronise the local shops and businesses, which should bring life and economic prosperity back into Callington.'
This week saw the beginning of a month-long consultation with members of the public.
Plans will be on display in the town hall until October 29 and residents are invited to comment on them by filling in a feedback form which will be available there.
Details can also be found on the council's website and comments can be submitted online by visiting the website http://www.cornwall.gov.uk/trafficconsult">www.cornwall.gov.uk/trafficconsult
If the scheme goes ahead it is estimated that it will be completed by the end of March next year.
