RESIDENTS of a street where dangerous driving and speed have long been a concern are being urged to give their views on new proposed safety measures.
In Old Road, Liskeard, parked cars, narrow sections of highway and the excessive speed of some motorists have combined to make a headache for local people as well as parents walking their children to Hillfort Primary School.
Last summer, pupil Talitha Price carried out a survey and presented evidence of speeding traffic to the school and the Town Council. She described the difficulty for pedestrians trying to social distance while also navigating the narrow pavement and parked vehicles.
Cornwall Councillors Jane Pascoe and Nick Craker took up the case, nominating the area to the local network Highways scheme for improvements.
They’re now encouraging everyone who lives along or uses the road to look at the Council’s plans for traffic calming.
The works proposed for Old Road and West Street include additional speed humps, more 20mph signs, waiting restrictions, widened footways, new pedestrian crossing points and signs to discourage HGVs from using the route and directing them onto the A38 instead.
As part of the proposal, existing waiting restrictions between the gates at Liskeard Hillfort Primary School would be removed, in order that a few pick-up and drop-off spaces can be made available for parents.
Cllr Pascoe said: “I know that a public consultation on the internet is not ideal for everyone, but unfortunately in these difficult and extraordinary times it is not appropriate to hold a physical presentation. However, I am eager that as many people as possible who are motorists, pedestrians and residents in the area can take time to look at the proposals.”
Cllr Craker added “This is about working together with residents, parents, the school and all road users to ensure a safer environment for everyone.”
The plans can be viewed at www.engagespace.co.uk/cornwall/ (look for Liskeard Old Road) and comments should be left by March 19.
