Proving that two is better than one, the twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand carried off the trophy for the 'best village' in the South East Cornwall Tourist Association's (SECTA) annual Caradon in Bloom awards held at the Hannafore Point Hotel.

The picturesque villages, on the Rame Peninsula, have won the title twice before, but were a little unhappy when SECTA decided to separate them last year, resulting in a title for Kingsand without Cawsand. However, for the 1999 competition, at their request, they were once again judged as one, and were delighted with the result.

Equally happy were Looe In Bloom, whose hardworking efforts ensured that the port won the coveted accolade of 'best town' in Caradon for the 8th year in succession, two of which in the past were tied with Liskeard.

Bloomers stalwart, Mr Roy Perriment, accepted the town award from MP Colin Breed, guest for the evening, who congratulated everyone for their outstanding efforts.

Other category winners were: SECTA members - garden (Butterdon Mill, Liskeard), floral garden (Windermere House, St Martin-by-Looe), floral display (Globe Inn, East Looe), best kept garden (Sea Haze, Guesthouse, Polperro).

Open - best commercial property in each town: Saltash (Holland Inn), Liskeard (White Horse Inn), Looe (Tom Sawyers), Torpoint (Smales), Callington (non awarded).

Conservation award - West Cliff Old Court (Polperro).

Judges' special awards - Looe Bay Holiday Park, Edgcumbe Arms (Cremyll). Special highly commended awards - Killarney Hotel and The Dolphin Hotel, both East Looe. The judging was carried out in August.
