Urgent need for a cemetery

Caradon councillors have been discussing the urgent need in Saltash for extra cemetery space in the coming years.

Saltash town council's burial board recently contacted Caradon about the need to acquire new cemetery land, as it is estimated there is only five year's use remaining in the existing cemetery.

The board considers land to the south of the existing churchyard is the preferred option - land which has been granted planning consent for the change of use to a cemetery. The change of use application was successfully made in l996, but because at that time there was thought to be ten years' use available in the existing St Stephens by Saltash churchyard, the land itself was not purchased.

Caradon councillors have been told that as the owner was reluctant to sell the land it was decided to defer further action.
