THE stage is set for one of Saltash's more unusual social events – the Red Ball at Ashtorre Rock Centre on Saturday, October 6. The event, organised by Jo Baskott, is to raise money for the restoration and maintenance of the Austin Gipsy fire tender, built in 1960 and one of only two working models left in the UK. The Gipsy, resembling an early Land Rover, is part of Saltash's heritage. It started its career at Polruan, but was based at Saltash for many years before passing into the ownership of Saltash Fire Cadets. It was saved for the town by a donation and now public funds are needed to bring it back to showroom condition – it is already a familiar sight at the regatta and will be at future events. Organiser Jo Baskott said: 'We would particularly welcome contact from those with mechanical skills who would like to work on the tender in their spare time. 'Although it's in good working order, we'd like to see it repainted to its original specification, so that Saltash can be proud of its remaining heritage.'
