TWO students from Torpoint School are among seven candidates standing for the post of North and East Cornwall Youth MP. Over the last three weeks, Tom Rose and Ryan Cooper have been taking part in a series of special meetings, where they have made presentations and answered questions on their manifestos. Both candidates were asked to identify five key issues affecting young people in Cornwall. Tom Rose would like to give Cornwall a stronger and more powerful voice, and encourage the young people of East Cornwall the opportunity to change things for the better. His key issues are: Increasing public transport and making it more affordable, more funding for facilities such as skate parks, supporting ways of cleaning beaches around Cornwall, improving the relationship between young people and the police and providing better education and information about drugs. Ryan Cooper says he's standing as a MYP as he is very concerned about the issues that affect both him and other people. His key issues are: Getting more money invested in local facilities such as swimming pools, racism, more education about environmental issues, nuclear dangers, and more affordable housing for young people. The elections take place on November 29, with young people placing their votes in their local schools and youth centres. The votes will be counted in the Long Gallery, County Hall, from Friday, December 3, and three winners will be announced at a special ceremony at County Hall on Saturday, December 4.
