FOLLOWING comments on the Cornish Times' Letters page on September 10, I would like to reassure your readers that two sets of public conveniences remain open in Liskeard. They are centrally located in Pike Street and the Westbourne car park, and Caradon District Council's Public Conveniences Task Group is actively considering how to improve and modernise these facilities. Council tax payers will be well aware of the challenges Caradon faces to keep costs to a minimum and council tax at reasonable levels yet maintain some quality of service in the face of declining Government funding. Reducing the cost of providing public conveniences is only one aspect of the larger issue of cutting our expenditure by at least £600,000 by April 2005. Your readers may also wish to know that neither Caradon District Council nor Liskeard Town Council have control of the police force or local buses as suggested by "Name and Address Supplied". Another correspondent, Mrs Cunniffe, raised the subject of bus passes. Anyone living in Cornwall who is aged 60 or over can obtain a free bus pass that allows them half fare concessionary travel on any registered bus route in Cornwall and for through services to Devon. Details are available on Cornish Key leaflets, which may be found in local libraries.
