The UK’s only permanent beach-based Frisbee golf course will be opening at Carlyon Bay beach, near St Austell, on Saturday, May 28, with a free launch party.

Live music will accompany two tournaments taking place during the day: one for under-18s in the morning, and an adults’ tournament in the afternoon.

Frisbee giveaways, art activities and face painting will keep younger ones entertained, while frisbee golf experts will be on hand to offer tips to anyone wishing to perfect their game.

Jez Willmott, owner of the Mount Edgcumbe Frisbee golf course in Torpoint, said: ’The course at Carlyon Beach will certainly have a few features that will make it interesting to play - the breeze and footing, for example, will present a unique set of challenges that will make for an exciting round. On the day, I will be running beginners’ classes and clinics, and offering coaching for putting and distance throwing.’

Teams for the tournaments can be made up of between three and six people, and can be registered in advance or on the day – full details are available via theCarlyon Beach Facebook page.

The course will remain on the beach all summer, and will continue to be free to use. Golf Frisbees and score cards will be available to buy from the onsite pop-up restaurants.

Frisbee golf (or disc golf as it’s sometimes known) has many similarities with traditional golf - the object of the game is to complete each hole in as few shots as possible. With disc golf you throw a flying disc or Frisbee rather than hit a ball, and to complete a hole you have to land the disc in an elevated metal basket.
