TRIBUTES have been paid to Saltash United ’club legend’ Colin Phillips, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday night.

He had two spells with the South West Peninsula League club, and held a number of positions on the club committee, most notably that of chairman in recent years.

A club statement said: ’Colin loved football but he loved Saltash United, and we will miss him.

’His funeral will be for family only. However, it is the club’s intention to hold some kind of memorial at a later date (when we can) to give local football the chance to remember Colin.

’Our thoughts go to his wife Margaret and all of Colin’s family at this desperately sad time.’

Ashes chairman Dave Bishop said on Twitter: ’I am devastated to hear the sad news of the passing of Mr Saltash United.

’He was a wonderful gentleman and a friend and inspiration to all who were lucky enough to know him.

’He was a superb servant to Saltash United and will be sadly missed.’

SWPL secretary Phil Hiscox commented: ’I am desperately sad to hear this news.

’Colin was a true gentleman and a hard-working and loyal football man.

’Football in the South West will be poorer for Colin’s passing.’

Millbrook chairman Mark Pratten said: ’Colin was a true gentleman and it was always a pleasure to see and speak with him.’

Ashes player-coach Danny Lewis tweeted: ’A true, softly-spoken gent who showed you didn’t always have to be loud to be heard. My dad remembered him as a top referee.’

There have been numerous other tributes paid by football clubs, officials and supporters from across the region.
