CORNWALL'S rugby squad face a formidable foe when they travel to Twickenham this weekend to take on the mighty Lancashire in the county championship finals for the second year in a row. Lancashire beat the black and golds last year and have won the coveted championship title no less than 22 times, seven of which have been in the last ll years. The Cornish squad have never managed to beat Lancashire in all their history. If it were support alone that won titles, then Cornwall would be the winners every time, for it is no secret in the rugby world that the Cornish supporters, known as Trelawny's Army, are the best there is. Ian Gordon, from Herodsfoot, secretary of the Trelawny's Army Supporters Club, says that the hardcore of members over the last 10 years have come from the South East Cornwall area. 'We get the most support here in the county,' he said. Dozens of coaches from all over Cornwall, plus three from the supporters club, along with convoys of cars, will be carrying thousands of Cornish fans over the Tamar to Twickenham for the kick-off on Sunday at 12.15pm. What will follow will be 80 minutes of waving the flag of St Piran, nail-biting nerves, shouting, cheering and the singing of the famous Cornish anthem Trelawny with gusto. Ian says the staff at Twickenham love it when they know the Cornish are on the march to the county final as it is always a packed and friendly day with the best atmosphere. He said he could hardly believe his ears when he rang the Twickenham ticket office on Tuesday. 'The lady on the end of the phone asked if they would be turning the lights off in Cornwall when the last coach goes over the Tamar Bridge. She had remembered that from the famous 1991 final when we beat Yorkshire. I was amazed,' he said. Ian says it is going to be a brilliant day whatever the outcome, but he is banking on the Cornish chough landing on the Lancashire red rose, and plucking the championship. 'We are going to bring the champions' cup back home to Cornwall where it belongs,' he said. Of the two supporters club coaches travelling up from Penzance tomorrow, one will stop off at Saltash Rugby Football Club at Moorlands Lane at 1pm, where Trelawny will be sung before going across the Tamar. The third coach leaves early on Sunday morning.
