I was astounded to read that the traders in Looe had rejected plans for a supermarket and leisure centre plus some affordable homes.

Surely the people of Looe should also have some say in this matter.

For years, local people with transport have travelled out of town to large supermarkets for their main shop but continue to use local shops for top-ups during the week.

If a larger store were to be built, this would save people time and money and people would travel to Looe to use the store from surrounding villages.

And people who live in towns nearby would come here for a change and then stop for lunch or have a browse around the town increasing trade to other shops.

As for the comment that it would change Looe into a ghost town full of charity shops and bargain basement stores, we already have lots of shops selling rubbish – perhaps a little competition would inspire some more shops that would be of some benefit to local people.

The main supermarket in Looe at present nearly stocks more alcohol than food and the choice is dismal.

Another reason we need a big supermarket is the jobs it would provide for people.

And housing – as long as it is affordable and for genuine local people – is much needed.

The idea of a leisure centre is fantastic: swimming in Looe, within walking distance, all year round, what a treat for all the community young and old.

Wake up traders, this town is growing and badly needs a larger supermarket.

When holidaymakers visit our small local supermarket they laugh and ask where else they can go. Every other town in Cornwall our size has one and we want one too.
