Torpoint will have to wait for replacement of its educational facilities following a decision by Cornwall County Council's Executive. The committee has chosen a project to replace the existing primary school in Camelford as the 2008/ 09 Pathfinder scheme and says re-organisation of primary schools in Carclaze, St Austell, remains its top priority for the following year. Preparation work will also continue on developing the scheme to replace the Torpoint Infants School in the Carbeile/community college site and creating a Torpoint education campus which will be included in a later phase of the programme. Cornwall was chosen to take part in the first year of the Government's Every Child Matters Primary Capital Programme to improve primary school buildings and allocated £6.5 million to spend on providing a new primary school. However, Government regulations mean this funding cannot be carried over into another year and so the Pathfinder project chosen must be completed by August 31, 2009. Three schemes – at St Austell, Camelford and Torpoint – were originally identified as meeting the Government's criteria, with the project to re- organise the existing separate infant and junior schools at Carclaze in St Austell into an all-through primary school and replace the existing sub- standard infant school selected as the top priority scheme. This will ensure that the £6.5m allocated to Cornwall will not be lost and will give time to sort out the remaining difficulties over the St Austell scheme.
